NEW DELHI: The fate of final year students continues to be a matter of grave concern as, despite the guidelines laid by the University Grants Commission (UGC), not all universities are on board to go ahead with the exams by September. And in light of the same, regular updates from UGC, as well as other esteemed bodies keep coming in.

On Wednesday, the Delhi High Court has requested a clarification from the UGC regarding the final year exams that are yet to be conducted, asking if it is possible to opt for open choices, MCQ based exams, assignments or presentations instead of the regular long-form exams that are conducted every year.

As has been asked by Justice Prathiba M Singh, the University Grants Commission (UGC) is due to explain the significance of the guidelines that were issued earlier where it mentioned the exam type that can be conducted by the colleges in order to carry out the final year exams.

A hearing regarding the same is due on July 24 i.e. two days from today. In addition, the UGC has also informed that as per the guidelines, the final year students cannot be evaluated on the basis of their marks in the internal assessments since it might raise a question on the credibility of the education system.

The hearing was the result of a plea that has been filed in the High Court challenging the decision of Delhi University to go ahead with Open Book Examination for the final year students in the undergraduate courses. The decision of DU has only come as a result of the guidelines that were laid by UGC to compulsorily conduct exams for final year students.
