New Delhi: Ever since the abrogation of article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, there were touted to come about, a lot of changes in the state. The sheer idea of doing so, as stated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi was to enable growth and quality of living, and now, in an attempt to bring about the same, our honourable Prime Minister has approved the proposal for a Central University in Ladakh, first of its kind in the city. This University will also have a Centre for Buddhist Studies.

This decision regarding the University was taken as an outcome of a meeting that was held in the presence of home minister Amit Shah, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, external affairs minister S Jaishankar, and a number of other top officials. The meeting was in lieu of assessing the measurers that the government has taken ever since Article 370 was revoked, as suggested by reports.

The next step to in this process is a formal decision from the HRD Ministry after sending across the proposed approval to them. Thereafter, it will also be moved to the union cabinet in order to be cleared for getting the final approval from the parliament.

Some of the courses that the University will be offering include basic sciences (not engineering and medical) along with liberal arts. Meanwhile, the idea for having a centre for Buddhist studies is to have students from the Tibetan Buddhist population also become a part of this university.

There has been a demand for a central university in the UT of Ladakh for the longest time now in order to avoid students having to move to different states for pursuing further studies. As per the reports, over 10,000 students from Ladakh were forced to travel far away in order to attain higher education.

When in action, the university will also invite students belonging to the districts of Lahaul and Spiti in Himachal Pradesh as and when the Rohtang La Tunnel is up and running, as is likely to be by the end of this year.
