Mumbai: The final year exams for students across the universities have been a concern and right now, the Bombay High Court as decided to let the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) conduct the final year dental (BDS) exams as well as the PG medical exams to be held later this month.

The bench hearing that was hearing a PIL opposing the decision of compulsory physical presence for the exams was being led by Chief Justice Dipankar Datta. Advocate Kuldeep Nikam, on behalf of a few students, has urged that exams be deferred/taken online due to the COVID-19 situation in the country. While the final year BDS exams are slated for August 17, the PG exams will be held on August 25.

Meanwhile, due to the contradictory pleas in both, the High Court as well as the Supreme Court, the decision to conduct the final year exams as well as the PG medical exams as per schedule has been granted and a stay on exams has been refused by the court. Also, the decision has been taken keeping in mind how things might prove to be disadvantageous for students preparing for the exams, and hence, the exams are imperative in moving ahead with the course/career.

As has been said by the MUHS counsel, RV Govilkar, the students writing these exams must graduate and further added how these are the students who will then be able to help the state and the country in fighting the novel Coronavirus.

Meanwhile, the Court also raised a question, asking the petitioners as to how will they treat patients later if they are not ready to write the exams physically. However, the High Court has also stated that in case any student still refrains from writing the paper and can make a case during the final stages in order for exams to be conducted separately, a direction regarding the same will be issued.
